MASCULINITY PROJECT

This project was a key part of my final year at university - it was part of an overarching ‘umbrella’ of related topics. It involved the exploration of issues surrounding masculinity, men, male sexuality, equality and issues within the LGBT+ community.

It also allowed me to explore whether society as a whole places unrealistic expectations of what men should look like. This topic has given me the opportunity to utilise a much more Illustrative technique - with a fun and suggestive twist.

It also tied in rather well with my dissertation topic for my final year - which primarily focused on the sexualisation of advertising and questioned whether the viewer is exploited through the sexualised content that is presented within advertising and what sort of impact this has on current culture. Through this I looked at whether there is a gender split in how men and woman are presented within advertising and what impact it could have on us.

This underpinned my studio practice for my final year as ‘sexualisation’ came into play within several of the topics I was looking into.
